The word “safest” is doing the ironic work here. An operation built on sameness feels safe precisely because it avoids the risk of standing out, of trying something that might fail visibly. But that safety has a hard ceiling built into it: an operation optimized to avoid risk cannot simultaneously optimize for excellence, because excellence requires the kind of distinctive choices that sameness is specifically designed to avoid.
[Safest Mediocre Execution] is what an operator gets in exchange for that safety — reliably fine, never distinctive, never actually at risk of failing badly and never actually capable of the outsized outcomes that come from committing to something specific. The ceiling isn’t a temporary plateau to push past with more effort inside the same model; it’s the structural output of the model itself; the only way past it is to abandon Values Of Sameness, not to execute the sameness harder.
