Definition
Meaningfully Differentiated Value. What the operation offers the Guest that no other operation in the Guest’s consideration set offers in the same way. Not a slogan. Not a positioning claim. The actual value that lands with the Guest during and after the experience — the reason the Guest comes back and brings others.
Explanation
The test is not “is our food good” or “is our service good.” The test is: what is meaningfully different about the value we deliver, and does the Guest experience the difference?
Two failure modes: undifferentiated value — the operation delivers value, but the value is available at every comparable operation in the consideration set, and the Guest has no reason to choose here over there. And differentiated non-value — the operation delivers something different, but the difference does not register as value to the Guest. Novelty is not [MDV].
[MDV] is a design output. It gets built into the operation by design — into the Product layer, the People layer, the Performance layer — and then it lands with the Guest as the reason to return.
