Relational thinking. Everything is a relationship to be built. Diagnostic: the aggregate Feel routes the Guest. The operator’s job is to engineer the senses with enough intention that the Feel routes the Guest down the great road on purpose, every time. Default operations route Guests randomly; engineered operations route them by design.

Explanation

Road 2 is often described in this framework through its compounding math and its contrast with Road 1’s decay, but the operating definition is simpler and more demanding: everything is a relationship to be built, on purpose, not left to chance. That includes the sensory environment itself — the aggregate feel of the room isn’t neutral background, it’s actively routing the Guest toward or away from the relational experience the operator intends.

The line between default and engineered is the whole game here. An operator who hasn’t deliberately designed the sensory and relational architecture of the operation is still routing Guests somewhere — just randomly, by whatever the space happens to communicate on its own. Road 2 requires taking ownership of that routing on purpose, which is a heavier lift than simply having good intentions about relationships.
