The filtering effect by which cast feedback to the operator is softened, withheld, or shaped before it reaches him — so the operator hears a version of the truth rather than the truth itself.

Explanation

Every layer of hierarchy adds a filter. A cast member doesn’t tell the lead the raw version of what’s wrong; they tell a version shaped by what feels safe to say to someone with authority over their schedule. The lead doesn’t pass the raw version up either — it gets rounded off again before it reaches the operator. By the time feedback arrives at the top, it’s been edited multiple times by people protecting themselves, not by people trying to deceive.

This is why [Values Dissonance] can run for years without the operator seeing it — [Social Friction] is one of the two mechanisms (alongside [Activity Crowding]) that keeps the gap invisible from the top. The fix isn’t demanding more honesty, it’s designing feedback paths that don’t require the cast to risk something to use them.
