Operator-state physics: there is no neutral. Every operator is either moving forward through compounding mechanisms or falling behind through decay. The middle-of-the-road, holding-steady state does not exist — it is only a misperception of a backward direction the operator has not yet detected.

Explanation

The trap is that holding steady feels safe. An operator who hasn’t changed the menu, the training, or the systems in three years can point to a stable P&L and call it stability. It isn’t. Guest expectations rise every year whether the operation moves or not, so the same Guest Experience against a rising bar is decline wearing the costume of consistency. The same culture against ordinary cast turnover is decay. The same systems against a market that has kept evolving is falling behind, measured against a moving line instead of a fixed one.
