Definition
The first named instance of [The Roundabout] method. Two Einstein truths bracket one Edison practice in a four-move sequence used to correct the operator’s thinking about learning and problem-solving before any prescription for operator action. Located at Ch 1.2, paragraphs 1.2.1–1.2.6, immediately after [The Bottleneck].
Explanation
The three-part loop:
– Einstein #1 — The only source of knowledge is experience.
– Edison — The process of elimination. Learning through what fails.
– Einstein #2 — You cannot solve a problem with the same level of thinking you had when you encountered it.
The name carries a double load. “Roundabout” names the intellectual structure — a three-part loop the operator walks through — and it names the operator’s condition when the loop is broken, stuck going in circles at the same altitude of thinking.
[The Roundabout] method exists because operator thinking errors precede operator execution errors. You cannot correct what an operator does without first correcting how they think. The Einstein-Edison-Einstein structure uses the conceptual weight of Einstein’s two truths to open and close the correction, with Edison’s practice-layer credibility running the middle. The bracket locks the thinking shift before the operator moves to application.
Four operating moves inside the sequence:
– Frame the current thinking that produced the current result.
– Prosecute the thinking against Einstein #1 — surface what the operator has and has not actually experienced.
– Run Edison in the middle — the operator’s own failed passes are the data. Elimination, not clever theory.
– Close with Einstein #2 — the operator cannot solve tomorrow from today’s level. New level required before new action.
First instance in the book. Five to ten more Roundabout instances are planned across the series. The naming convention carries the chapter position — [The Einstein-Edison-Einstein Roundabout 1.2] — to distinguish it from subsequent Roundabout instances.
