Definition
The brain’s systematic tendency to overweight what is immediate and underweight what compounds. As outcomes move into the future, their motivational pull drops — even when the objective payoff is significantly higher. Five children run under the parent: [Present Bias] (immediate relief beats future gain), [Future-Self Disconnect] (later doesn’t feel like me), [Projection Bias] (today’s mindset feels permanent), [Exponential Growth Bias] (compounding gets underestimated until it’s too late), [Opportunity Cost Neglect] (what else disappears from view). Together they explain why Road 1 is the default road — not because operators choose it but because the brain’s time-value architecture makes it the path of least resistance. The operator on Road 2 is running against the grain of every one of these distortions simultaneously. That is not a character achievement. It is a design discipline.
