Past a threshold, additional options don’t empower — they paralyze. The brain can actively hold roughly four to seven items for comparison at once. When options exceed that window, evaluation shifts from careful comparison to simplified heuristics — pick the first acceptable option, follow the familiar name, or defer entirely. In the restaurant building: the menu with too many items produces Guests who can’t decide. The pre-shift with too many standards produces cast who default to the visible ones. The operation with too many priorities produces a team that executes the urgent and ignores the important. Curation is a leadership discipline — the operator who narrows and structures choices reduces the burden on every actor in the building.
Explanation
[Complexity Decline]
Working Definition:
The tipping point at which accumulated operational complexity crosses from manageable to operation-breaking. Where [Static Decline] is decay through inaction, [Complexity Decline] is decay through compounding action — every workaround, every added process, every undocumented exception contracts the relational capacity of the operation until the system can no longer produce the experience it was built to produce. The operator who reaches [Complexity Decline] is usually the busiest person in the building. That is the tell. The operation is not standing still — it is moving in the wrong direction under the weight of its own accumulated doing.
Family: Child of [Static Decline]. Pairs with [The Bandaid Scaffolding] (mechanism that produces it), [Question Dumb Shit] (corrective discipline), [Reality Check] (cadence audit that catches it before tipping point), [Law of Constant Motion] (the physics underneath — complexity is motion, but motion in the wrong direction is still falling).
