Tenured cast members carry pattern memory — they know what normal looks like, smell drift early, raise the flag before it’s visible in the numbers. Turnover wipes the instrument clean. New cast doesn’t know what’s missing, because they never saw it present.

Explanation

The tell is a specific kind of silence: the operator asks whether the room feels off tonight and gets shrugs, because nobody on shift has been there long enough to have a comparison point. The read instrument is technically staffed but functionally blind — there’s no pattern memory left on the stage to notice the drift.

The fix is a tenure floor, not a coverage floor: anchor at least one tenured, pattern-memory cast member on every shift. If no tenured cast member is on the roster for a given shift, the operator works the stage themselves and runs the read in person rather than trusting a read instrument that isn’t actually there.
