The moment the gap between self-story and operational reality finally becomes felt as pain, and the operator’s first visible response is aimed outward — blame at the market, the labor pool, the economy, the landlord, reviews, technology, “people today.” Projection protects the self-story: if the problem lives out there, the operator can stay solid in here. [Detection Lag] lengthens every time the operator lets himself believe the source of drift is entirely beyond his reach. Diagnostic signal: if every explanation points outside the walls, an Externality Flare is in motion.

Explanation

Blame is cheap and self-story is expensive to give up, so the trade is almost automatic. An operator who says “nobody wants to work anymore” has found a story that costs him nothing to believe and protects him from having to look at his own hiring, training, and leadership. The flare isn’t a lie, exactly — labor markets are real, reviews are real — it’s a half-truth doing the full work of an explanation.

The cost is compounding, not one-time. Every month the operator spends pointing outward is a month [Detection Lag] grows, because the actual drift inside the building keeps compounding while the operator’s attention is fixed on the parking lot. The flare eventually burns out on its own — pain that persists past every external explanation forces the [Externality Flare] into the next beat, whether the operator is ready or not.
