The state where the instruments determine the question. Once an operator’s dashboard is built around a fixed set of metrics, those metrics stop being a lens on the operation and become the operation’s effective definition of success — anything the instruments don’t track becomes invisible to the operator’s decision-making, regardless of whether it matters.

Explanation

The mechanism is quiet because it doesn’t feel like a limitation, it feels like discipline. An operator who runs a tight dashboard believes he’s being rigorous, and he is — rigorous about the questions the dashboard asks. The cost is everything the dashboard doesn’t ask, and that cost never shows up as a line item, because a metric that was never tracked can’t produce a variance to explain.
