Definition
The diagnostic that distinguishes a real competitive position from a category description. A valid position must have a credible opposite — a strategy a competitor could choose that is the direct inverse of the position being tested. If no competitor would credibly choose the opposite, the position is not a position. It is a category membership claim dressed as differentiation. “We care about our Guests” fails the test — no competitor claims not to care. “We design every visit so the Guest never wants to leave” passes the test — its credible opposite is “We move Guests through efficiently so they can get on with their day.” Both are real positions. The existence of the opposite confirms the position is specific enough to be strategic. The absence of a credible opposite confirms the position is [Values Of Sameness]. Open Questions: * Is [The Opposite Test] a creation-side diagnostic tool (used by the operator to evaluate their own position) or an operator-side IP term (something the book teaches the operator to run on their concept)? * Does [The Opposite Test] apply only to the [UEP] — the experience claim — or does it apply to every stated value, every standard, every design decision in the operation? * Who runs [The Opposite Test] — the operator alone, or does it require an outside read to catch the blind spots [Folding OP] produces? Workshop Trail: * Sourced from compiled Drive reference document — “The Opposite Test: A valid competitive position must have an opposite strategy that a competitor could credibly choose.” * Locked as IL candidate — child of [UEP], diagnostic instrument for [Values Of Sameness]. * The test runs in two directions: (1) Does my position have a credible opposite? If no — [Values Of Sameness]. (2) Does my competitor’s position have a credible opposite? If yes — they have a real position worth understanding. If no — they are on category floor, breachable. * Application in Product fundamental: the operator who cannot state the opposite of their experience design has not yet built a differentiated experience design. They have built a category-adequate experience that any competitor with enough capital can replicate. * Application in Perspective fundamental: the operator who has never run [The Opposite Test] on their own concept is running a position they have not examined. [Folding OP] — the wrong operating picture — is what you get when the position has never been tested against its opposite. * Pairs with [UEP] — the [Opposite Test] is the validation instrument for the [UEP]. A [UEP] that fails the test is not a [UEP]. It is a category description in experience language. * Pairs with [Values Of Sameness] — [The Opposite Test] is the diagnostic that exposes [Values Of Sameness] before it is built into the operation’s foundation. * Pairs with [Competitive Value Read] — the [Opposite Test] is the point-in-time diagnostic; the [Competitive Value Read] is the ongoing discipline of confirming the position still holds. perspective_ip_analysis ### The Accountability Demand
Explanation
** Without [Accountability Demand], [Role As Verb] has no direction. [Role As Verb] says the role is the live performance of its verb. [Accountability Demand] says the verb runs toward the GX. The two together complete the canon of how roles operate in the building. [Accountability Demand] is legitimate only inside [The Real Accountability Model]; when run inside [The Scapegoat Model] it is blame, not accountability.
Family: ** Canon — MAJOR. Sits alongside [Role As Verb]; together they define what the role is and what the role is accountable to.
Placement: ** Canon-level, book-wide. Anchor teaching likely in Perspective fundamental, sequenced right after [Role As Verb]. Specifically central to Ch 13b
