Definition

The Road 2 operator move. Refuses to treat a broken part as the unit of analysis. Treats the relationship between the part and the model it sits inside as the unit of analysis. Asks whether the broken part belongs in the system at all, then redesigns through it so the failure mode can’t recur. Distinguished from Road 1 systemic thinking by the unit of analysis: Road 1 structure is built to keep existing parts running; Road 2 structure is built to question whether those parts should exist.

Explanation

Most operators, even sophisticated ones, default to Road 1 systemic thinking when something breaks — they build a better process around the broken part to keep it running more reliably. That’s real work and it isn’t nothing, but it accepts the part’s existence as a given and optimizes around it.

[Relational Innovation] asks a harder question first: does this part even belong in the system, or is its recurring failure evidence that the model itself needs to change around it. This is the move that produces actual redesign rather than better patching. An operator running [Relational Innovation] doesn’t build a more elaborate workaround for a broken vendor relationship — they ask whether that vendor relationship should exist in its current form at all, and redesigns the model so the same failure mode structurally can’t recur.
