Definition
The seventh filter spoke under The Operator’s Filter. Red failure question: is this transactional or relational. TBM is Transaction-Based Model; RBM is Relationship-Based Model. TBM produces a commodity with a price-sensitive Guest base; RBM produces a differentiated operation with a relationship-loyal Guest base.
Explanation
The filter question is deliberately binary because the two models produce measurably different Guest bases, not just different operating philosophies. A TBM operation trains its Guests, whether it intends to or not, to shop on price — every interaction reinforces that the exchange is a commodity transaction, so the Guest evaluates the next visit the same way they’d evaluate any commodity purchase.
An RBM operation trains its Guests toward loyalty by building something price alone can’t replicate. This is why the filter question belongs in the operator’s decision-making at the point of design, not as an after-the-fact label applied to results. Every policy, script, and pricing decision either reinforces TBM or builds RBM — there’s no neutral third option, which is exactly what makes this filter spoke useful as a red-failure check before a decision ships.
