Definition
The operator’s discipline of holding all Guest touchpoints together as one coherent thing the Guest composes into a single read on the operator. Without it, the operator is producing a pile of disconnected touchpoints and the Guest will compose something anyway — the operator simply isn’t authoring it. With it, the operator is authoring what the Guest composes. Functions as Layer 3 of [The Operator Decision Tree].
Explanation
Every Guest forms a single impression of an operation, whether the operator designed for that or not. The reservation experience, the greeting, the pacing of service, the food, the check presentation, the follow-up — the Guest doesn’t file these as separate data points. They compose them, automatically and mostly unconsciously, into one story about what this place is. [The Aggregation] names the operator’s job of making sure that composition is intentional rather than accidental.
This is upstream of [Pipeline Failures]: before the aggregation pipeline can fail at any of its five stages, there has to be an aggregation discipline in place to fail. An operator with no aggregation discipline at all isn’t failing a pipeline — there’s no pipeline to fail. They’re just hoping the pieces add up to something coherent, and hope is not a design method.
The stakes are structural, not cosmetic. A Guest who experiences five disconnected touchpoints doesn’t average them into a a fair overall score — they tend to weight the worst one heavily, because incoherence itself reads as a lack of care. [The Aggregation] is what turns isolated good moments into a compounding brand impression instead of a collection of near-misses.
