The instrument of [By Design Or By Default]. Full form: “We walk our talk. By design or by default?” Used at Pre-Shift and Post-Shift, and used as the bare question once within each of the five fundamentals.

Explanation

The [Walk Question] is deliberately short because it has to survive being asked under time pressure, twice a shift, for years. It isn’t a philosophical prompt — it’s an audit trigger. Every operator claims to walk their talk. The question forces the claim to declare its mechanism: did that walk happen because you built the system that produced it, or did it happen to land that way today and you got lucky.

Asking it at Pre-Shift sets the frame before the shift can drift. Asking it again Post-Shift closes the loop — the operator has to reconcile what they intended against what actually happened, by design or by default, with no room for a third answer. Repetition is the point. A question this simple, asked this often, is what keeps [By Design Or By Default] from staying an abstract principle and turns it into a daily habit of self-audit.
