At any snapshot in time, every relationship in the operator’s portfolio — Guest, cast, vendor, community — is in one of three states: Deepening, Holding, or Drifting. The operator’s job is to read which state each relationship is in and act accordingly. Triage, not judgment.

Explanation

The three states are not a scorecard. They’re a triage system, and the distinction matters. A scorecard implies the operator is grading relationships as good or bad. A triage implies the operator is deciding where to spend limited attention right now, based on trajectory rather than a static verdict.

A Deepening relationship doesn’t need rescue — it needs continued investment so it keeps compounding in the direction it’s already moving. A Holding relationship isn’t in danger, but it isn’t advancing either; left unattended long enough, holding tends to drift, because [Static Decline] is what happens when nothing actively maintains a position. A Drifting relationship is the one that needs the operator’s attention first, because drift compounds quietly and becomes loss before it becomes visible.

Reading the state correctly is the whole discipline. An operator who spends attention on already-Deepening relationships while a Drifting one erodes unnoticed has done real work and still lost ground, because the work went to the wrong place.
