Take a floor-level product, clone it across many doors, and footprint starts looking like scale. The plate is not great, the service is not great, but the consistency of mediocrity across locations gets mistaken for operational strength.

Explanation

The trap this names is subtle because footprint genuinely does look like an achievement from certain angles — investors, franchise prospects, and even operators themselves can read a growing door count as proof of a working model. [Replication Arbitrage] names the version of that growth where what’s actually being replicated is mediocrity, cloned reliably enough that its consistency gets mistaken for quality.

The tell is asking what exactly is being scaled. Genuine scale replicates a standard worth replicating — a real Guest Experience, engineered and transferable. [Replication Arbitrage] replicates whatever the original location happened to be, good or mediocre, and mediocrity clones just as easily as excellence does. More doors doesn’t validate the model; it just multiplies whatever the model actually was, for better or worse.
