Explanation

The distinction between managing to the number and managing to the standard is precise and consequential. A standard describes what right actually looks like in the operation — the Guest Experience, the quality of execution, the read of the room. A metric is an attempt to represent that standard in measurable form, but the representation is never perfect, and this lie is what happens when the operator forgets the gap exists.

Once the metric becomes the destination rather than a proxy for the real target, the operator starts making decisions that improve the number without improving — or even while actively damaging — the underlying standard the number was supposed to represent. This is the direct mechanism behind [The Dashboard Trap]: an operator running [Transactional Lie #4] has replaced the real target with its measurement, and from inside that replacement, the drift is invisible, because the number keeps looking fine even as the thing it was meant to track quietly comes apart.
