The Demand

This week, you check whether you are managing your cast through pressure, incentives, fear, and control — or through conditions that let them discover why the work matters. If you’re running on Operator Bias, the performance you’re getting stops the moment the pressure lifts.

The Work

  1. Identify one cast member you currently manage primarily through pressure — deadline threats, fear of consequence, or a bonus structure with no development behind it.
  2. Ask yourself directly: do you see this person as a labor expense to manage or a human investment to develop? Write the honest answer down.
  3. This week, replace one instance of pressure-based direction with a conversation that lets that cast member discover why the task matters, instead of being told.
  4. Identify one cast member who is satisfied but not engaged — shows up, does the job, goes home. Name the specific condition missing that would move them from satisfied to invested.
  5. Build that condition this week: give them ownership of one outcome, not just a task.

By the end of this week, you have replaced at least one manipulation-based interaction with an inspiration-based one, and you have moved at least one cast member one step closer to engaged.
