The framework teaches five fundamentals: Perspective, Product, People, Performance, Profit. Operators sometimes read them as five separate disciplines to run — five skill areas to build capability in, five domains to master. That read misses what the fundamentals actually are.

The fundamentals are not five separate disciplines. They are five terrains where the natural law operates. The principle governs each of them. The physics is the same across all five. Only the terrain changes.

Perspective is the terrain of the operator’s read. The operator’s capacity to see their operation is either designed or defaulted. A designed read has built structure — cadences, questions, disciplines, lenses. A defaulted read runs on ambient impressions and confirmation bias. The principle governs Perspective because the operator’s ability to see is a cause layer, and every cause layer traces to design or default.

Product is the terrain of the Guest Experience. The GX is either designed or defaulted at every touchpoint. A designed touchpoint has built structure — the intent, the sequence, the standard, the recovery. A defaulted touchpoint runs on whatever the cast, the environment, and the ambient conditions produce on their own. The principle governs Product because the Guest is receiving an experience produced by a man-made system, and every element of that experience traces to design or default.

People is the terrain of the cast. The cast is either designed or defaulted at every layer of hire, coach, lead, and develop. A designed cast has built structure — criteria, cadence, standards, ladders. A defaulted cast runs on whoever applied, whatever felt natural to hire, whatever leadership showed up. The principle governs People because cast behavior is an outcome of the cast system, and the cast system traces to design or default.

Performance is the terrain of ongoing execution. The disciplines that run the operation are either designed or defaulted at every layer of read, standard, correction, and learning. Designed Performance has built cadence and named standards. Defaulted Performance runs on whatever the shift produces. The principle governs Performance because execution is a cause layer for every downstream outcome, and every cause layer traces to design or default.

Profit is the terrain of the P&L. Every margin outcome is either designed or defaulted at the upstream layers of pricing, mix, cost architecture, capital allocation, and revenue design. Designed Profit has built structure at every upstream layer. Defaulted Profit runs on whatever prices the market accepts, whatever mix the Guests order, whatever costs the vendors set. The principle governs Profit because the P&L is a downstream outcome layer, and every downstream outcome traces to design or default at the upstream layers.

Five terrains. One law. That is why the framework operates as a coherent system rather than a collection of disciplines. Every diagnostic the operator runs in Perspective is the same diagnostic — read the design layer, name the default layer, rebuild where needed — applied to Perspective terrain. The same diagnostic runs in Product, People, Performance, and Profit. Different terrain, same law.

An operator who learns the fundamentals as separate disciplines has to remember five distinct skill sets. An operator who learns the fundamentals as five faces of the principle has one skill — read for design or default — applied five ways. The second operator moves faster, integrates more cleanly, and holds the framework as one thing instead of five.

That is what makes the framework a framework and not a compilation. The principle is the through-line. The fundamentals are the terrain. The tools are the applications of the principle to each terrain. Every part traces to the natural law that governs the operating domain, and every operator running the framework is running the law across all five faces at once.

The fundamentals are not the framework. The natural law is the framework. The fundamentals are where the natural law shows up.
